Audi A3 Radiator

The Audi A3 Radiator ensures that the engine of the compact car remains at a safe temperature by quickly transferring heat in the coolant to the flowing air. This Radiator is a heat exchanger placed directly behind the grille to allow natural airflow and the electric fan to remove any amount of heat that the coolant channeled through the tubes can generate. Those tubes are connected with fins which provide the liquid with an enormous surface area so that heat can be stripped off by convection and return the coolant to the block, where it can be applied again in the work to meet the current Audi efficiency requirement. During the manufacturing history of the A3, there have been two predominant construction types, which may be described as lightweight aluminum cores with plastic or aluminum side tanks and older copper or brass units that have greater weight but different corrosion resistance. Aluminum versions, which are currently commonly applied on the majority of Audi models to provide weight and cost savings, dissipate heat well due to the great conductivity of the metal, whereas copper or brass designs are easier to solder but have greater mass. No matter what it is made of, all Audi Radiators share a common route, where hot coolant taken out of the inlet tank is directed through fin-packed tubes and then out of the Radiator through the outlet tank. The highly usual failure is a leak, starting at a seam or from debris causing a hole; even a small hole can be brazed or welded, but many units are simply replaced to ensure permanent peace of mind. Regular coolant drains maintain the insulation of the tubes and preserve the factory-characteristic performance that Audi standards internalize in the Radiator system.

Audi A3 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit a radiator on Audi A3?
    A:
To remove the radiator, first switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers. Undo the retaining screws and securing clips from the air filter housing and ducting, then remove it from in front of the battery tray. For engines other than the 1.6 litre SOHC, move the lock/radiator carrier to its Service position; for the 1.6 litre SOHC, only the front bumper needs to be removed. Drain the cooling system, which may involve removing the electric cooling fan temperature sensor from the bottom hose or disconnecting the bottom hose from the radiator. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the radiator by pulling out the clips and easing off the hoses. Disconnect the wiring from the cooling fan connector at the bottom left-hand side of the radiator and remove the fan assembly. On non-turbo models, remove the radiator side shields and undo the radiator securing bolts, then move the top of the radiator slightly to the rear and withdraw it upwards from the lower mounting rubber grommets. For turbo models, release the securing clip and disconnect the hose from the left-hand side of the intercooler, then undo the two retaining screws at each side of the radiator and withdraw it upwards similarly. If the radiator was removed due to suspected blockage, reverse flush it and clean dirt and debris from the radiator fins using an airline or a soft brush, taking care as the fins are sharp. A radiator specialist can perform a 'flow test' to check for internal blockages, and any leaking radiator should be taken to a specialist for permanent repair, avoiding attempts to weld or solder it. Check the radiator mounting rubbers and renew them if necessary. Refitting is the reverse of removal, and upon completion, refill the cooling system with the correct type of antifreeze.
