  If the engine is still in the car, first disconnect the battery negative lead, remove the power steering pump if fitted while leaving the hoses connected, and take off the alternator drivebelt along with the air conditioning compressor drivebelt if applicable. Next, remove the radiator grille. Use Audi tool 2084 to lock the vibration damper on the front of the Crankshaft stationary, then use Audi tool 2079 to loosen the centre bolt, which is tightened to a high torque. It may also be possible to loosen the bolt while holding the starter ring gear stationary with a wide bladed screwdriver. Unscrew the centre bolt and withdraw the vibration damper, crankshaft gear, and timing belt. Separate the vibration damper from the crankshaft gear by removing the bolts with an Allen key, then reinsert two diagonally opposite bolts on a few threads and tap them through the damper. Avoid turning the crankshaft with the timing belt removed. If necessary, unbolt and remove the timing belt rear cover. Begin refitting by locating the timing belt rear cover on the front of the Cylinder Head and block, tightening the retaining bolts and studs as applicable. Reassemble the vibration damper to the crankshaft gear, fit and tighten the bolts, align the key on the crankshaft gear with the slot in the crankshaft, and locate the timing belt on the crankshaft gear, ensuring not to trap the belt between the gear and the oil pump housing. Coat the threads of the centre bolt with locking fluid, insert the bolt, and tighten it while holding the crankshaft stationary. The torque wrench setting for this bolt is only applicable when using Audi tool 2079; if not using this tool, tighten the bolt to at least the specified torque and have an Audi dealer check its tightness upon completion. Fit the Woodruff key and gear to the Camshaft, insert the bolt and washer, and tighten to the specified torque. Check that the timing marks are aligned, locate the timing belt on the crankshaft, camshaft, and water pump gears, and over the idler. Turn the water pump anti-clockwise to pretension the belt, ensuring the TDC timing marks remain aligned. Tension the timing belt until it can just be twisted through 90° with the thumb and forefinger, midway between the camshaft and water pump gears, and tighten the water pump mounting and adjustment bolts when the adjustment is correct. Turn the crankshaft two complete turns, then re-check the timing belt setting and adjustment. Finally, refit the timing belt covers and the valve cover with new gaskets, and if the engine is in the car, reverse the preliminary procedures.
