In the event that the engine remains in the car, initially disconnect the negative lead of the battery, drain the cooling system, remove the inlet and exhaust manifolds, remove the distributor, HT leads and spark plugs, disconnect the drivebelts off the crankshaft pulley, and all the associated wiring, cables, and hoses. Then detach the upper radiator cowl, and where necessary, the power steering pump but leave the hoses attached, and the air conditioning compressor and leave the refrigerant pipes attached. Next, take out the hydraulic tappets,
Camshaft(s) and water pump. Disassemble timber bolt and take off timing belt rear cover and the spacers. Unscrew the cylinder head bolts by a turn at a time (reversed) and then loosen the bolts of the cylinder head (along with their washers) with a splined socket. When every bolt is removed, carefully lift the cylinder head out of the block, and tap it free with a wooden mallet (if it is stuck), and never put a lever between the gasket joint. Lastly, take out the cylinder head gasket on the block.
