If the engine is still in the car, first disconnect the battery negative lead, then remove the power steering pump bearing and hoses if fitted, followed by the alternator drivebelt and, if applicable, the air conditioning compressor drivebelt. Next, remove the lower radiator grille. Use Audi tool 2084 to lock the vibration damper on the front of the crankshaft stationary, and then use Audi tool 2079 to loosen the centre bolt, which is tightened to a high torque. It may also be possible to loosen the bolt while holding the starter ring gear stationary with a wide-bladed screwdriver. Remove both timing covers on the 1.9 engine, unscrew the centre bolt, and withdraw the vibration damper along with the crankshaft gear and timing belt. Separate the vibration damper from the crankshaft gear by removing the bolts with an Allen key, then reinsert two diagonally opposite bolts on a few threads and tap them through the damper. Avoid turning the crankshaft with the timing belt removed. If necessary, unbolt and remove the timing belt rear cover, noting that the water pump pivot bolt must be removed along with three oil pump bolts on 1.9 engines, while keeping track of the spacers. Begin refitting by locating the timing belt rear cover on the front of the cylinder head and block, tightening the retaining bolts and studs as applicable, and refitting the spacers on the 1.9 engine while leaving the water pump pivot bolt loose. Reassemble the vibration damper to the crankshaft gear, inserting and tightening the bolts. Align the key on the crankshaft gear with the slot in the crankshaft, locate the timing belt on the crankshaft gear, and fit the gear to the crankshaft, ensuring the belt is not trapped between the gear and the oil pump housing. Coat the threads of the centre bolt with a liquid locking agent, insert the bolt, and tighten it while holding the crankshaft stationary. Follow the specified procedures for the next steps, and if the engine is in the car, reverse the preliminary procedures.
