Audi 4000 Stub Axle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the stub axle and rear wheel bearing components on Audi 4000?
    A:
Chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car, and support it on axle stands before removing the rear roadwheel and releasing the handbrake. Remove the cap from the centre of the brake drum by tapping it on alternate sides with a screwdriver or blunt chisel, then extract the split pin and remove the locking ring. Unscrew the nut and remove the thrust washer, followed by withdrawing the brake drum while ensuring the outer wheel bearing does not fall out; if the drum binds on the shoes, use a small screwdriver to lever up the wedged key to release the shoes if necessary. Remove the outer wheel bearing inner race and rollers from the brake drum/hub, then lever the oil seal from the inner side and withdraw the inner wheel bearing inner race and rollers. Use a soft metal drift to drive the outer races from each side of the brake drum/hub, clean the bearings and brake drum/hub with paraffin, and examine all components for wear and damage, renewing any pitted surfaces and obtaining a new oil seal. Pack the bearing cages and tapered rollers with lithium-based grease, also packing grease into the brake drum/hub inner cavity, then drive the outer races fully into the brake drum/hub using a length of metal tube. Insert the inner bearing inner race and rollers, locate the oil seal with the sealing lip facing inward, and drive it in with a block of wood until flush, smearing a little grease on the oil seal lip and wiping clean the outer face. To remove the stub axle, first remove the rear brake shoes, then remove the brake fluid reservoir filler cap and tighten it down onto a piece of polythene sheeting over the reservoir filler hole to prevent fluid loss, or alternatively fit a brake hose clamp on the hydraulic hose. Unscrew the brake pipe union on the rear of the wheel cylinder, unscrew the bolts, and withdraw the brake backplate and stub axle from the rear axle mounting plate while disconnecting the handbrake cable. Refitting the stub axle is a reversal of the removal procedure, ensuring the mating faces are clean and tightening the bolts to the specified torque. Locate the brake drum/hub on the stub axle and fit the outer wheel bearing, followed by the thrust washer and nut, tightening the nut firmly while turning the drum/hub, then backing off the nut until the thrust washer can just be moved by pressing on it with a screwdriver without levering or twisting. Fit the locking ring without moving the nut and install a new split pin, then tap the grease cap onto the drum/hub. If the stub axle has been removed, bleed the brake hydraulic system and depress the footbrake pedal firmly to set the rear brake shoes before refitting the roadwheel and lowering the car to the ground.
