When the starter does not react to operation of the starter switch, the first step is to ensure that the fault is not outside the starter. Terminal 30 on the starter solenoid connects directly to the battery, and is the large terminal where the test lamp will be connected between the chassis earth and the test lamp: regardless of whether the
Ignition Switch is operated or not, the test lamp must light. Take the connection of the test lamp out of the big terminal, and place it in the small one on the solenoid, so that the lamp can only light as long as the starter switch is in its Start position. In case these tests are both satisfactory, it is the fault of the starter. In the event, the starter is heard to be activated, but the engine does not start, confirm the cleanliness and tightness of the battery terminals, the starter leads, and the engine-to-body earth strap.
