- Q: How should you dismantle the Coil Springs, Shock Absorber, Strut Bearing and Wheel Hub safely and effectively on Audi 4000?A:Do not seek to dismantle the suspension strut unless a spring compressor has been installed, when a special compressor is not available have the strut dismantled in a garage. Install the spring compressor, and clamp the Wheel Bearing housing in a vice and compress the spring until the upper spring retainer is unclamped, then easy out the slotted nut at the top of the piston rod with a special tool or in a peg spanner by holding the piston rod in place with an Allen key. Take off the strut bearer and the spring retainer and push out the coil spring of the strut leaving the compressor in place, so that the top of the spring is kept in mind. Installation Removing the components of the bump stops on the piston rod, keeping track of the sequence. Pull up and down the shock absorber piston rod in the full stroke to verify that the resistance is even and smooth; and in case of any evidence of seizing, no resistance, or over-fluid leakage, it will be necessary to renew the shock absorber by screwing out the screw cap using the hexagon box spanner or Audi tool No 40-201 A, but the tool must fit correctly as the screw cap is tight. Remove the shock absorber in the strut, and where replacement of the strut wheel bearing housing is to be done - remove the wheel bearing and replace the bearing and hub in new housing. Clean all the parts, particularly the shock absorber recess in the wheel bearing housing and make sure that new coil springs are of the same color code as the removed ones. Examine the bearing of the strut and replace in case it is worn, bearing in mind that the new type may need to be a modified one when the old is already in place. The procedure of reassembly is the opposite of the removal process, making sure that the screw cap and slotted nut are firmly tightened in accordance with the required torques.
