A removal of the transmission can be done by first removing it entirely. In models with the 012 transmission, a screwdriver is used to separate the release lever and the ball stud of the transmission bellhousing. Should it be hard, then use the spring clip of the pivot side of the release lever and pull it through the opening to release. Remove the lever and release bearing out of the guide sleeve and apply a screwdriver to push the plastic tabs to release the bearing to the lever. In case of subsequent models, take off the plastic pivot on the ball stud, observe shape of the stud. In the case of 01E transmission, loosen the bolt which holds the spring plate in the bellhousing and roll out the plate then slide the release bearing and lever out of the guide sleeve across the input shaft of the transmission and remove the intermediate part. To check, rotate the release bearing by hand to ensure that it rolls smoothly, if it is coarse it requires replacement. In case of reusing, clean it with cloth without liquid solvents. To refit, lubricate the ball stud and plastic pivot with copper grease, coat the release bearing surface that fits the fingers of the diaphragm spring and the release lever, and the guide sleeve. In the 012 transmission, insert the spring to the release lever and make sure to have the plastic pivot located on the subsequent models. Install the lever and bearing by pushing the release lever on the ball stud until the spring contains it. In the 01E transmission, place the intermediate piece on the release lever with the lug on the slot and then refit the release bearing of the lever and position the spring plate and tighten the bolt.
