- Q: What are the steps required for refitting the rear axle shaft assembly and associated components on Audi 100?A:During refitting, new mounting bolt nuts of the lower mounting and a panhard rod nut will be needed. Start with chocking front wheels, jacking rear of the car and acting on axle stands. Disconnect the battery negative lead, and take off both rear road wheels, holding the rear discs to the hubs with wheel-bolts, as may be necessary. Should this be required take off the tank of fuel protective cover to gain access to the rear axle. Complete slacking of the handbrake cable adjuster nut. In models equipped with rear drum brakes, take out the brake drums, unscrew both handbrake cables off the brakes, and tap the cable end connectors out of the backplates. In models that have rear disc brakes, loosen the inner cables of the handbrake off the caliper levers, disconnect the retaining clips and release the cables off the calipers. Cut all the handbrake cables out of clips and grommets, clear of the trailing arms. In models that have ABS, lift the cushion of the rear seat to reach the wiring connectors of the wheel sensors and unscrew them and un-clip the wiring. Unscrew the grommets at the bottom of the vehicle and then drag the connectors out using the axle assembly. Using the rear axle assembly, trace the brake pipes/hoses all the way up to the unions in front of it and disconnect them and seal the ends to the best of ability, limiting the loss of fluid. Where necessary, unscrew the nuts and remove the spring bolt on the top of the axle. Ensure that everything is turned off and place trolley jack under the rear axle assembly lifting it up to hold the weight. Unscrew the nuts and bolts fixing the suspension strut lower mountings to the rear axle, disposing of the old ones and using new ones on refitting. Take out the nut and washer that is holding the panhard rod to the rear axle, but be careful not to lose washer. In models which have no rear anti-roll bar, retract the spacer between the axle beam. Disassemble the axle pivot bolts, ease the jack and take the axle assembly out of the undercarriage of the car. Check the damage of the axle pivot bushes and replace them in case of need with the help of hydraulic press. Hold the rear axle up into place, then place the pivot bolts, and loosely tighten. Install the position washers on both sides of the panhard rod, position it with the axle, and put in the mounting bolt, but make sure that the spacer is in place where it should be. Reinstall the bolts of the suspension strut tower mounting and screw on with new nuts and screw them loosely. Install the rear brake pressure regulating valve spring bolt back. When using ABS models, the rear wheel sensor wiring connectors must be passed through the vehicle body, attached to the wiring, and the connectors reconnected, and the seat cushion fitted again. Reconnect the pipes, refit the brake hoses to the brackets and tighten the union nuts. Rerun the handbrake cables through the trailing arms and make sure they are properly laid back and hold them in with clips. Connect the handbrake cables to the disc brake/calipers and insert the cables in the backplates respectively in models with disc and drum brakes. Install the rear roadwheels again, lower the car and screw the wheel bolts. Having the vehicle on wheels, rock it to ensure the rear axle is settled then loosen the axle pivot bolts, panhard rod, and suspension strut lower mounting bolts to the torque tolerance indicated. Lastly, drained the braking system and positioned the handbrake cable, and adjusted the valve adjustment when attached to the rear axle.
