1990 Audi 100 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and refit the auxiliary drive belt on 1990 Audi 100?
A: There are two drive belts, one supplying the coolant pump, power steering pump, and the other one supplying the alternator. The drive belt of the coolant pump/power steering pump is V-type, whereas the alternator is ribbed or multi-groove. Tension on the V drive belt is accomplished by reloading the power steering pump, but a spring tensioning device is used in the ribbed drive belt to achieve tension. The V-belt should be removed by jacking the front of the car and resting it on axle stands and then using the handbrake to remove the undershield. Unscrew the lockbolt and lower mounting bolt of the power steering pump, loosen the tension of the V-belt and slide it off the pulleys. Look at the belt and wear it or replace it if it is damaged. The process of refitting is the process of undoing the process of removal and making sure that the tensioning is properly achieved by swiveling the power steering pump and adjusting the nut to the preferred level of deflection. Install all bolts to required torques and drop the vehicle. To take the ribbed belt, take the same first steps of removing the V-belt, then prise off the tensioner pulley cover and ensure that there are manufacturer marks on the ribbed belt. Loosen up the tension of the belt with a socket and a wrench and slide the belt off the pulleys. In order to refit, it is necessary to make sure that the belt is positioned correctly on all the pulleys, adjust the tensioner, and press the cover back in place and then to re-install the V-belt and to lower the vehicle.
