1988 Audi 80 Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to properly remove and reinstall a cylinder head on 1988 Audi 80?
A: Disconnect the battery negative lead and drain the cooling system. Remove the inlet and exhaust manifolds, along with the HT leads and spark plugs. Take out the camshaft and tappets, and then remove the alternator. Unbolt the earth cable from the cylinder head and disconnect the heater hose, top hose, and bypass hose from the cylinder head. Disconnect the wiring from the temperature senders and unbolt the timing belt rear cover. Using a splined socket, unscrew the cylinder head bolts a turn at a time, then remove the bolts along with their washers. With all the bolts removed, lift the cylinder head from the block, tapping it free with a wooden mallet if necessary, and remove the cylinder head gasket from the block. Thoroughly clean the contact faces of the cylinder head and block, then locate a new gasket on the block with the words 'OBEN TOP' facing upwards, ensuring the location dowels are in position. Carefully lower the head onto the block without using any jointing compound on the cylinder head joint. Insert the cylinder head bolts with their washers and initially hand-tighten them using a splined socket. Following the specified sequence, tighten all the bolts to the stage 1 torque, then to the stage 2 torque, and finally angle-tighten by half a turn (180°) without stopping. Refit the timing belt rear cover and tighten the bolts, then reconnect the wiring to the temperature senders and the heater hose, top hose, and bypass hose. Refit the earth cable and tighten the bolt, followed by refitting the alternator, camshaft, and tappets. Finally, reattach the HT leads and spark plugs, the inlet and exhaust manifolds, refill the cooling system, and reconnect the battery negative lead.
