1987 Audi 4000 Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How is the fuel pump located and operated on 1987 Audi 4000?
A: Fuel pump is on the left hand side of the engine and is driven by either an eccentric on the intermediate shaft in 4 cylinder engines, or the camshaft in 5 cylinder engines. Start by unplugging the negative battery cable and by making sure that the car is in a well-lighted place, which does not expose it to any ignition sources. Disconnect the fuel lines of the pump, which can be unclamped and then the two securing bolts are removed to lift the pump, flange, and gasket. The pump cannot be repaired and all that we can do is to clean the filter, to clean the filter, first remove the screw that is at the center of the pump, then remove the cover, sealing ring, and the filter. Wipe the pump top using a lint-free cloth and clean the filter with fuel and then reassemble the filter, a new sealing ring and cover with making sure that notch on the rim connects with the matching notch on the pump body. Screw the center screw firmly and do not bend the cover of the pump. Install a new gasket in contact with the cylinder block, then the flange, sealing ring and pump with the lever or plunger fitting properly in contact with the cam. Attach the pump, bolt the pump and attach the suction pipe of the fuel filter to the pump cover. Install a container at the bottom of the pump delivery pipe, reconnect the battery leads, and then disconnect and ground the high tension cable of the ignition coil to avoid engine firing and electrical sparks. With help turn on the starter, a couple of seconds, making sure that the pump produces uniform bursts of fuel; in case everything is fine, connect the pump delivery hose and screw on the clamps.
