Audi TT Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Drive Belt (ribbed belt) on Audi TT?
    A:
For 1.8L 4-cylinder engines, once the engine is switched off, upper and lower sound absorber panels are removed. If needed, take out the upper turbocharger air duct. Be sure to mark a running direction if the belt is to be reused. Utilize a 15 mm open-end wrench to draw the tensioner roller away from the belt and hold it there. After aligning the hole in the tensioner with the hole in the tensioner mount, secure the two with a lock pin. To fit a ribbed belt, the following checks must take place: the belt must have an arrow with the running direction; all drive pulleys must run true and must be tight; the belt at the trailer must be completely seated in all pulleys; and the belt is installed with the correct path. To install sound-absorber panels, remove the locking tool, start the engine and check the belt for its correct running. For the 3.2L 6-cylinder engine, turn the engine off and detach the passenger side sound absorber panel, lower, and right-side lower sound absorber panels Before removing a reused belt, mark the running direction. Disengage the belt tensioner and screw in an M8x40 all-thread bolt into the tensioner. Take off the belt from the alternator pulley and, working from below with the sound absorber panels removed, slip the ribbed belt off the other pulleys. When installing, take note that the belt is marked with the direction of running, a ribbed belt is to be installed onto the pulleys in the order from crankshaft to coolant pump pulley. Ensure all drive pulleys run true and are tight, that the belt is seated completely in all the pulleys, and that it is installed in the correct path. Remove M8x40 all-thread bolt fitted on the tensioner, start the engine and check for proper running of the belt; install upper and lower sound absorber panels. If the tensioner has to be replaced, remove the belt and leave the M8x40 all-thread bolt in the tensioner. Then, remove the three mounting bolts and lift the tensioner out. Transfer the M8x40 all-thread bolt to the new tensioner before fitting.
