  In the following procedure, 2.7 liter or 2.8 liter V6 engine timing belt replacement will be explained, requiring a number of special tools and procedures. We start the vehicle by raising it up off the ground and using a jack to support it. Once supported we can remove the upper engine cover, and lower engine cover we can then remove the viscous fan and accessory belt. Mark the direction of rotation before removing the belt if you want to reuse it. Following that, remove the front bumper and place the lock carrier in the service position. Loosen the hose clamps on the pressure hoses between the intercoolers and the turbo pressure lines on both sides. Then remove the turbo pressure lines on both sides, taking note of the positioning of the retaining strips. While working at the front of the engine, remove the accessory belt tensioner and unclip the timing belt covers on both sides. Then remove the centre timing belt cover. With the use of a wrench, rotate the crankshaft until the marks on the crankshaft pulley and lower crankcase cover align themselves, indicating crankshaft top dead center. Verify the position of both camshafts. The larger holes of the oval securing plates on the camshaft sprockets must face one another. If this is not the case, turn the crankshaft through another full rotation until they do. While working under the engine, remove the sealing plug from the left side of the cylinder block and install the special tool into the hole, rocking the crankshaft if necessary to ease installation. Detach the crankshaft pulley without untightening or removing the center bolt of the pulley. Start by removing the accessory belt idler mounting bolts. Then, lift out the idler pulley bracket. Next, remove the timing belt cover bolts and lift off the cover. Place an 8 mm Allen wrench to the belt tensioner roller and rotate it clockwise. Applying slow pressure on the oil-dampened tensioner will remove the tensioner. When the tensioning lever compresses the tensioner, insert a 2mm diameter pin into the bore to release timing belt tension. If the belt is to be re-used, please mark direction of rotation before removing. Finally remove the timing belt.

  How to reinstall the Timing Belt and camshaft components on Audi A6?

  Before the timing belt is reinstalled, spin the timing belt tensioner while listening for a worn bearing and replace it as necessary. Using special tool VAG 3391, install camshaft locking bar into oval securing plates. Loosen camshaft sprocket bolts and back out approx five turns, then remove camshaft locking bar. For each camshaft, the camshaft sprocket bolt is removed and the camshaft sprocket is pulled off using puller VAG T40001. Install the camshaft sprocket, oval securing plate and hand-tighten it until it is just loose enough to rotate but not wobble. Instead of a puller, we can gently tap the sprocket after sufficiently loosening the camshaft sprocket bolt. This will break the press fit at the camshaft. A soft-faced hammer is preferred. The timing belt must be installed to all sprockets with the earlier marked direction if a reused belt. Using special tool VAG 3391 reinstall the camshaft locking bar into the oval securing plates. Then back off the timing belt tensioner using an 8 mm Allen wrench. Remove the tensioner locking pin and slowly release the tensioner. Using a torque wrench and an 8 mm Allen bit, apply 15 Nm (11 ft-lb) counterclockwise tension to tension the timing belt, so that the tensioner will be fully expanded and the timing belt properly engaged. Tightening the camshaft sprocket bolts, remove the camshaft locking bar and the crankshaft locking pin, and complete the installation in the reverse order of removal.
