Audi A6 Power Steering Pump

The Audi A6 Power Steering Pump magnifies the steering effort to ensure that one can easily navigate the sedan by making slight turns on the steering wheel while parking or navigating in the city. This Power Steering Pump is mounted directly to the engine, is driven by a crankshaft belt, and directs pressurized fluid through tough lines into the steering gear, converting engine movement into sharp driver action. The previous constant flow models and subsequent electronically modulated models all have a reputation of rock-solid reliability, allowing the car to retain its planted feel both at cruising speed and while weaving through a car park. The compatibility covers all generations of the Audi A6 saloon and Avant, and therefore those who have C4-C8 cars will be assured of an exact fit that bolts up easily. Its purpose is not just comfort, as even when making an evasive maneuver, the driver will be able to retain control due to the consistent hydraulic assist, which provides an extra level of security coupled with the widely praised quattro grip of Audi. Subsequent electronically adjusted pumps narrow the assistance as speeds increase, a phenomenon enjoyed by drivers of any A6, cutting the parasitic drag at highway speed and pushing the fuel consumption down a notch. The smart pressure regulation prevents excessive lightness of steering feel that was a concern to critics in earlier models, and an integrated fluid reservoir makes maintenance easier. Even the squeal of a belt or increased effort in parking provides early warning that the Power Steering Pump might require some maintenance and provides a proactive approach that keeps the rack seals intact and the system free of spillages for years. Due to intensive factory testing, every Audi pump is made to materials and clearances that are tested to resist heat soak and high rpm abuse, solidifying its status as a go-to component in luxury sedans. Comfort plus responsiveness is what drivers require, and the Power Steering Pump has been a major component of the balanced chassis feel that the Audi badge has been renowned for providing.

Audi A6 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Power Steering Pump and associated components in the 2.8 liter engine on Audi A6?
    A:
Unclip the upper engine cover and remove it. Remove the bolts for the air filter duct housing at the front of the lock carrier and lift the air duct out. Disconnect the 5-pin connector from the ignition coils, then disconnect the three rear connectors from the ignition coils. Remove the four mounting bolts and swing the ignition coil bracket toward the rear. Counterhold the pulley for the viscous fan using a VAG 3212 spanner and remove the viscous fan with a VAG 3312 open-end spanner, lifting it up and out. Remove the electric fan by first removing the bolt, releasing the electric fan harness clips on the viscous fan air guide, and rotating the electric fan slightly to place it aside to the right. Before removing the engine accessory belt, mark the direction of rotation with chalk or a felt-tip marker. Turn the belt tensioner to the right using a long torque wrench and a 17 mm socket insert, securing it when both bores align. Remove the accessory belt from the belt pulley and unbolt the belt pulley for the power steering pump, counterholding it with a VAG 3212 spanner. Pinch off the intake line and return line using 3094 hose clamps, remove the expansion hose bracket bolts on the cylinder head, open the clamp and remove the fluid supply hose, and unbolt the expansion hose. Be prepared to catch dripping fluid. Unbolt the power steering pump bracket and remove the pump together with the bracket, then unbolt the power steering pump from the bracket. When installing, fill the intake side with hydraulic fluid and turn the pump by hand until fluid comes out the pump side, cleaning any spilled fluid in the engine compartment. Install the pump with the bracket, first tightening the front two bolts and then the rear two bolts to 22 Nm. Install new seals on the banjo fitting, tighten the banjo fitting for the expansion hose, bolt the line for the expansion hose to the cylinder head and tighten it, and install the intake hose with the marking facing toward the pump. Remove the hose clamps and tighten the Allen bolts for the power steering pump belt pulley. First, install the ribbed belt onto the crankshaft pulley and idler wheel, pushing the belt onto the tensioning roller last. Note the previously marked direction of rotation of the belt and ensure it is seated correctly on the pulley. Remove the drift, first install the electric fan and then the viscous fan, fill and bleed the steering system, and check the steering system for leaks.
