Audi A4 Heater Core

The Audi A4 Heater Core is a miniature heat communicator that enables the occupants to stay warm and allows the windshield to remain clear when the outside temperature drops. Hiding under the dash of all modern Audi sedans or wagons, including the hot-selling A4 model, this small radiator is connected to the engine via inlet and outlet hoses, where it directs hot coolant into shallow tubes of aluminum or brass, where it is dispersed by fins. A blower motor then blows cabin air over the fins, and it is able to harness excess heat from the engine rather than burn it, thus all Audi drivers experience consistent climate comfort without unnecessary consumption of fuel. Audi retained the same general concept, but developed methods of control over the years. Previously cars applied a simple cable-operated valve that was either open or closed based on the temperature, whereas later vehicles employed actuators that are electromechanical in nature and temperature sensors to combine or divert hot fluid to the driver and passenger compartments with much greater accuracy. Chilled air in evaporator coils may also be passed to the Heater Core to be heated again, to eliminate moisture and window fog. The Heater Core is also applied as a supplementary radiator and releases a bit of additional heat when driving spiritedly. With proper coolant, the Audi part enjoys a long service life, but poor maintenance causes troubles like clogging with sludge, corrosion problems, and a constant sweet smell of coolant in the cabin, and repair of this problem is troublesome to the owners since most of the dashboard has to be dismantled, including the small yet very important Heater Core.

Audi A4 Heater Core Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a heater core on Audi A4?
    A:
Take off the engine covers, remove and disconnect the battery and empty the cooling system. Label the heater hoses and disconnect them at the heater core inlet and outlet on the engine side of the firewall; in the event that they are difficult to separate, the hose should be cut and new ones installed during installation. As much coolant as possible must be removed using a suction gun and the open tubes plugged. Disassemble the knee bolster, heater core cover fasteners and cover and remember to cover the carpet with plastic cover to avoid spillage of the coolant. Dislodge the heater core tube clamp fasteners, put a rag or small drain pan under the tubes and carefully unclamp the tubes off the core. After all the coolant is drained, remove the heater core in the housing. The opposite of removal is installation, and it is necessary to make sure that the heater core pipes and core have been installed with original insulating or sealing material. Fill up and bleed the cooling system and then get the engine going and ensure proper functioning.
