The multifunction switch that is on the top of the transmission discourages unintended choice of some forward and reverse gears when the vehicle is in motion. In the first step, turn off the ignition and put the lever on the lever to N. The next step is to remove the end of the selection cable attached to the lever of the selector on the transmission with a wide-bladed screwdriver and squeeze the clip to remove the outer cable off the bracket. Disassemble the wiring of the multifunction switch, unscrew the nut on the lever attaching it to the spindle of the switch and unscrew the lever. Fold down the tabs of the lock washer and unscrew the spindle nut. Carefully align the switch with the transmission housing, and remove the mounting bolts and draw the switch off the shaft of the selector, with the washers attached to it. To refit, the reverse process must be performed, but this time make sure to secure the spindle nut, and that the mounting bolts are changed to the recommended torque since Audi technicians employ a setting gauge to ensure that the multifunction switch has been correctly adjusted.
