- Q: How to remove and refit the ignition switch and steering lock/switch carrier on Audi A3?A:To remove the ignition switch, first disconnect the battery negative lead and position it away from the terminal, then remove the Steering Wheel. Undo the screws to take off the column height and reach adjustment handle, release the gap cover, and unclip the upper shroud from the steering column. Remove the lower shroud by undoing the screws, carefully disconnect the plug from the ignition switch, and insert the ignition key to turn it to the Drive position, aligning a hole with a dot on the plastic cover. Insert a 1.2 mm wire to depress and withdraw the lock cylinder. For refitting, place the switch back into the steering lock housing, remove the wire, and ensure the retaining clip engages. Check the ignition switch is secure, reconnect the wiring plug, and reassemble the upper and lower shrouds along with the gap cover, followed by the column height and reach adjustment handle, and finally the steering wheel before reconnecting the battery negative lead. For the steering lock/switch carrier, disconnect the battery negative lead and ensure the front wheels are straight before removing the steering wheel. Remove the column height and reach adjustment handle, then the upper and lower shrouds, releasing them from the adjustment handle. Take out the steering column electronics control unit by undoing the retaining screw and using a rod to release the clips, then disconnect the wiring. Hold the airbag clock spring in its central position while unclipping it from the combination switch carrier, and if applicable, pull the steering angle sensor away from the carrier.
