For safety, the fuel tank must always be removed in a well-ventilated area, never over a pit. Begin by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car, and support it on axle stands before removing the tank filler cap. Position a suitable container beneath the fuel tank to receive the fuel, then loosen the clips and disconnect the supply and return hoses from the tank. Prise out the rubber grommet and disconnect the breather pipe. Remove the trim from inside the luggage compartment and disconnect the wiring from the fuel gauge sender unit. Disconnect the breather pipe from the top of the tank and unclip it from the side. Unscrew the mounting bolts and screw, then remove the clamping plates to lift the fuel tank from the luggage compartment. If the tank is contaminated with sediment or water, remove the gauge sender unit and swill the tank out with clean fuel; if damaged or leaking, it should be repaired by specialists or renewed. With the tank removed, check the gravity valve by disconnecting the hoses and pulling the valve up from the retainer; it should be open in a vertical position and closed when tilted by 45°. Refitting the fuel tank involves reversing the removal process, ensuring new cushioning strips are fitted.
