Chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car, and support it on axle stands. Check the thickness of the outer rear brake pads by looking through the holes in the wheels, using a torch if necessary, and inspect the inner pads with a mirror and torch through the holes in the rear of the brake callipers. If any pad is worn down to the specified minimum thickness, renew all the rear brake pads together. If there is any doubt about the thickness, remove both rear wheels for a thorough investigation. To remove the pads, first take off the wheels, marking them if they are to be re-used for proper refitting. For Teves callipers, prise the caps from the inner ends of the guide pins, using grips if they are tight, then unscrew both guide pins with an Allen key without removing them from the rubber bushes. Pull the calliper slightly outwards to force the piston into its bore for clearance, swing the calliper to the rear, and support it to one side without straining the hydraulic hose before removing the brake pads from the calliper frame. For Girling callipers, unscrew and remove both guide pin bolts while holding the guide pins with an open-ended spanner, then swing the calliper to the rear and support it to one side before removing the brake pads and the heat shield. Brush dust and dirt from the calliper, piston, disc, and pads, avoiding inhalation, and scrape any scale or rust from the disc and pad backing plates. For Teves callipers, push the piston fully into the cylinder using a G-clamp and a block of wood, locate the brake pads on the calliper frame, and note that the new brake pads include four self-locking bolts for Girling callipers only. Locate the calliper over the pads, insert and tighten the two guide pins, and fit the caps on the guide pins. For Girling callipers, screw the piston into the cylinder to accommodate the new brake pads using an Allen key while pushing firmly on the piston; Audi recommends tool number 3131 for 38 mm diameter pistons. Refit the heat shield, locate the brake pads on the calliper frame, position the calliper over the pads, and insert the new guide pin bolts, tightening them to the specified torque while holding the guide pins. Fully release the handbrake, then use a screwdriver to lever the handbrake arm on one of the rear callipers against its stop, repeating the procedure on the opposite calliper and checking if the first lever remains on its stop. If it does not, loosen the adjustment nut on the equalizer as necessary. Insert a screwdriver of at least 6 mm diameter between the rear spring hook and roller of the rear brake pressure regulator. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal forty times on callipers with 36 mm diameter pistons or just once on those with 38 mm diameter pistons. Check that both rear wheels rotate freely, remove the screwdriver from the brake pressure regulator spring, and lower the car to the ground.
