Chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car, and support it on axle stands before removing the rear roadwheel and releasing the handbrake. Remove the rear brake duct if applicable, then tap the cap from the centre of the hub on alternate sides with a screwdriver or blunt chisel. Extract the split pin and remove the locking ring, unscrew the nut, and take off the thrust washer. Withdraw the brake drum hub carefully to ensure the outer wheel bearing does not fall out; if the brake drum binds on the shoes, use a small screwdriver through a wheel bolt hole to lever up the wedged key to release the shoes. Remove the outer wheel bearing inner race and rollers from the brake drum/hub, then lever the oil seal from the inner side and withdraw the inner wheel bearing inner race and rollers. Use a soft metal drift to drive the outer races from each side of the brake drum/hub, clean the bearings and brake drum/hub with paraffin, and examine all components for wear and damage, renewing any pitted bearing surfaces and obtaining a new oil seal. Pack the bearing cages and tapered rollers with lithium-based grease, and also pack grease into the brake drum/hub inner cavity. Drive the outer races fully into the brake drum/hub using a length of metal tube, insert the inner bearing inner race and rollers, locate the oil seal with the sealing lip facing inwards, and drive it in with a block of wood until flush, smearing a little grease on the oil seal lip and wiping clean the outer face. For drum brake models, remove the rear brake shoes, then remove the brake fluid reservoir filler cap and tighten it down onto a piece of polythene sheeting over the reservoir filler hole to prevent fluid loss, or alternatively fit a brake hose clamp on the hydraulic hose. Unscrew the brake pipe union on the rear of the wheel cylinder, then unscrew the bolts and withdraw the brake backplate and stub axle from the rear axle mounting plate while disconnecting the handbrake cable if applicable. Refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuring to bleed the brake hydraulic system on drum brake models, and adjust the wheel bearing by tightening the nut firmly while turning the drum/hub, then backing off the nut until the thrust washer can just be moved by pressing on its edge with a screwdriver without levering or twisting. Fit the locking ring without moving the nut and install a new split pin, then tap the grease cap onto the drum/hub.
