Unscrew and remove the bolts securing the tie-rod carrier plate to the steering rack, then support the plate above the rack using a block of wood. Prise the rack and pinion boot from the groove in the retaining ring on the rack and slide the ring off. Loosen the clip and remove the rack and pinion boot from the steering gear housing, withdrawing it over the rack. Scoop any remaining grease from inside the rack and pinion boot and smear it on the rack, replacing any lost grease with the special Audi grease (part number AOF 063 000 04). Locate the new rack and pinion boot on the steering gear, fit the clip with the screw connection towards the bulkhead, and tighten it. Push the outer ring fully onto the rack and ease the rack and pinion boot into the circular groove. Finally, locate the tie-rod carrier plate on the rack and insert and tighten the two bolts to the specified torque.
