Audi 80 Fuel Pump

The Audi 80 Fuel Pump does a good job of transferring gasoline from the tank to the engine and thereby allowing the Audi to start fast and drive smoothly. Early Audi 80 models with carburetors operated on a camshaft-driven mechanical Fuel Pump mounted on the block with a lever and diaphragm that drew fuel at about 6 to 15 psi to ensure that the float bowl of the carburetor did not fill up. With the advent of injection, Audi began using an in-tank electric Fuel Pump which rotates under the condition of a constant supply of correct voltage, cools in a stream of fuel, and provides approximately 40-60 psi of fuel flow to the injector to achieve a fine spray. Instead of being wired, the mechanical version features a non-noisy mechanical Fuel Pump unit outside the tank which switches off when engine rotation is interrupted, but the electric version requires a circuit of relays and may be cut off by the electronic control unit when the Audi 80 vehicle perceives a collision. Both of these styles are rated in gallons or liters per hour, and there is a basic formula of horsepower that determines whether the pump selected can maintain full-throttle speed. In case of a cranking engine that does not start, a quick hint can be given by listening to the slight whir of the electric Fuel Pump motor, and then voltage or pressure measurements can be taken to pinpoint the causes of failure. This is because Audi can ensure that all its 80s will still be supplied with consistent fuel flow, sharp acceleration and reliable operation by modifying its pumping strategy to suit the changing engines.

Audi 80 Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to check and troubleshoot the fuel pump circuit on Audi 80?
    A:
Check that the fuse supplying the fuel pump circuit is intact. Disconnect the HT wire from the ignition coil and connect it to earth with a bridging wire. Chock the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and support it on axle stands for access to the fuel pump. Operate the starter briefly and check that the fuel pump is heard to be operating; on engines PM and 3A, it will operate as soon as the ignition is switched on. If the fuel pump does not run, remove the fuel pump relay from the relay board and connect a bridging wire from the battery positive terminal to the relay terminal 52 in the board. If the pump now runs, the relay is faulty; if not, check the supply wiring to the fuel pump. If the pump is working but the fuel supply is insufficient, the filter may be blocked. To remove the fuel pump, disconnect the battery negative lead. Unscrew the nuts (where fitted) and disconnect the wiring from the pump. Fit a hose clamp to the fuel supply hose. Position a suitable receptacle beneath the pump to catch spilled fuel, then disconnect the hose and union, plugging the two pipes. Unscrew the nut and release the mounting clamp, then withdraw the pump. If necessary, remove the mounting clamp from the pump. Refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuring that the lug engages with the recess in the clamp.
