Drain the cooling system, then for four-cylinder engines, remove the alternator and drivebelt, unbolt the pulley from the water pump drive flange, loosen the clips and disconnect the hoses from the rear of the water pump housing, unscrew the nut and remove the special bolt retaining the lower timing cover to the water pump assembly, unbolt the water pump assembly from the cylinder block and remove the sealing ring, and finally unscrew the bolts and remove the water pump from its housing using a mallet to break the seal, also removing the gasket. For five-cylinder engines, on models equipped with power steering, remove the pump while leaving the hoses connected and place it to one side, then use an Allen key to unscrew the nuts and withdraw the timing cover. Set the engine on TDC compression for No 1 cylinder, unbolt the timing belt rear cover, loosen the water pump mounting and adjustment bolts using an Allen key as needed, and rotate the pump to release the tension on the timing belt. Unscrew and remove the bolts, noting the location of the stay where applicable, then withdraw the water pump from the cylinder block and remove the sealing ring, ensuring not to move the crankshaft or camshaft with the timing belt slack. If the water pump is faulty, renew it since individual components are not available, and clean the mating faces of the water pump, cylinder block, and pump housing for four-cylinder engines. Refitting is a reversal of removal, using a new sealing ring and gasket as applicable. For five-cylinder engines, remove the upper radiator cowl and tension the timing belt, checking that the crankshaft and camshaft are still on TDC for No 1 cylinder, then fill the cooling system and tension the alternator, power-assisted steering pump, and air conditioning compressor drivebelts as applicable.
