Apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the car, and support it on axle stands before removing the roadwheels. Disconnect the inner ends of the tie-rods and, if applicable, remove the bolt securing the steering damper to the tie-rod bracket. Unscrew and remove the clamp bolt securing the flange tube to the rack and pinions, then use a soft metal drift to drive the flange tube off the pinion. For models with power assisted steering, place a suitable container beneath the rack and pinions, unscrew the union nut and bolt, and detach the hydraulic feed and return lines, recovering the washers. Unscrew the mounting bolts and withdraw the rack and pinions through the aperture in the side panel. Refitting is a reversal of removal, ensuring that if the tie-rod bracket is secured by two bolts, they are fitted loosely before installing the rack and pinions. Delay tightening all nuts and bolts until the weight of the car is on the suspension, and check and adjust the front wheel alignment if necessary.
