2016 Audi A3 Batteries Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How should the specific gravity of the electrolyte in standard and low-maintenance batteries be checked and maintained on 2016 Audi A3?
A: In the case of vehicles with normal and low-maintenance batteries, we should regularly measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte after every three months of operation in case the vehicle does not cover many miles annually, in which case, one should measure the specific gravity of electrolyte using hydrometer after taking off the batteries and the cell caps. The readings of specific gravity are to be corrected according to the temperature of the electrolyte and low level of electrolytes should be replenished with distilled water. Differences of 0.040 or even greater in the specific gravity of cells are indicative of possible problems, which will require a battery replacement in the case of significant change. Maintenance-free batteries have no provision to test the electrolytes, instead, they can be tested by a battery condition indicator or voltmeter. When the voltmeter is used, you must make sure that the batteries were not charged in six hours before testing, and the electrical circuits are turned off. A voltage reading of less than 12.2 volts means that the batteries are discharged and a voltage reading of 12.2 to 12.4 volts indicates that the batteries are partially discharged. When recharging, a low current battery charger should be used and there is no reason to detach the battery leads. The rate should be charged 10 percent of the battery capacity and trickle chargers may be charged overnight. Quick boost its charges are not recommended because of the possibility of overheating. Batteries that are maintenance free should take a longer time in charge; in most cases three days and also be charged with constant voltage charger with a range of 13.9 to 14.9 volts. In the case of fully dischargable batteries, it is advisable to be helped by the professionals so that the process can be safely charged.
