2015 Audi A3 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace the crankshaft seal at the timing chain end and the crankshaft seal at the flywheel driveplate end for 1.6 litre DOHC petrol engines on 2015 Audi A3?
A: Removal of the timing chain end oil seal To fit the timing cover oil seal, the crankshaft pulley must first be removed and the depth of the installed seal recorded. Slowly pry open the old seal with a flat bladed screwdriver being careful not to damage the cover or crankshaft intermediate sleeve, or, one may also punch two small holes in the seal, screw in self-tapping screws and pull out with pliers. Wipe the cover recess and sleeve and make sure that the new oil seal is dry and free of oil or grease. Insert the fitting adapter with a given oil seal expander, push the new seal on to the sleeve, or tap it in place with an appropriate tubular drift, with the lips of the sealing lips facing inwards. In the flywheel driveplate end oil seal, which is clamped with the oil seal housing and speed sender, remove the flywheel/driveplate and intermediate plate, position the engine to TDC and remove the sump. The wiring attached to the engine speed sender can be disconnected, and the sender pulled off and unbolted, and the rubber grommet is retrieved. Unscrew and disassemble the housing securing bolts, press off the housing with the help of 3 M6 bolts, tightening it step by step until it releases. In case of reuse of the housing, the timing ring should not be moved. Install the new housing, aligning the timing ring hole to the TDC mark, and fit it to the special VAG tool, making sure that the TDC pin and hole align. Wipe the crankshaft, inspect TDC and place the tool and new housing over the crankshaft, and guide it with two M6 bolts. Install the tool nut with a tightening force of 35 Nm to press the timing ring on the crankshaft with a 0.5 mm clearance between the timing ring edges and the crankshaft surface and a narrow air gap between the housing and the cylinder block. After removing the guide bolts, replace them with other housing securing bolts and tighten them up to the desired torque. Lastly, attach the crankshaft speed sender mounting bolt, screw it and reconnect the sump, intermediate plate and flywheel.
