1992 Audi 100 Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and refit the Belt Tensioner components in the engine compartment for 5-cylinder petrol engines on 1992 Audi 100?
A: Firstly disconnect the battery negative lead to take out the components. Engage the handbrake, lift the front part of the car and put it on axle stands. 1. Undo the undershield underneath the engine compartment then undo the front retaining lug, the bumper in front and both front headlights. Unscrew the cable attached to the bonnet lock, take off the crossmember attached on engine compartment side panels and front supports. Unscrew the radiator mounting bolts, but leave the hoses attached, and then disassemble the support loosening the radiator, pulling the right-hand side of the radiator forward. Remark aside the bracket on the right-hand side of the radiator, loosen the mounting bolts and draw the radiator forward. Take out the viscous fan unit, the auxiliary drivebelt and auxiliary drivebelt tensioner. Position the engine at TDC by rotating the crankshaft then loosen the upper and bottom timing belt covers. Unscrew the tensioner bolts, rotate it anticlockwise in order to slip the timing belt and remove the tensioners. In the case of the camshaft sprocket, the jack-up procedure and removal of the required parts should be repeated. Disassemble the timing belt by pulling off the camshaft sprocket of the sprocket, unscrew the bolt of the camshaft sprocket holding the sprocket still and removing the bolt, washer, sprocket and key. Take off timing belt and disloosen the crankshaft sprocket and the vibration damper and pulley. Clean and check all sprockers on wear and damages and clean up the tensioner wheel and inspect the tensioner on wear. In refitting: position the crankshaft sprocket, the pulley and the vibration damper back into place, and ensure that the bolts are tightened to the required torque and then refit the timing belt and reattach the battery negative lead. Find the key of the camshaft and install the sprocket, washer and bolt, and then tighten the bolt to the correct torque and hold the sprocket. The other process is the reversal of the steps of removing with the observance of the appropriate tensioning of the timing belt.
