    A: To service the rear disc brakes, make sure that the handbrake is firmly pressed, jack up the rear of the car, and hold it well on axle stands then remove the rear roadwheels. Pad thickness can be checked easily by making a quick check of the pad thickness, through the inspection hole on the back of the caliper with a steel rule checking the thickness of the pad lining, including backing plate, to ensure that it is within the required minimum. A peep through the caliper inspection hole will give a rough letter on the status of the brake pads, however, to be confident the brake pads must be detached and cleaned, which will also give an opportunity to inspect the status of the caliper and thoroughly examine the brake disc on both sides. In case the thickness of any pad is worn to the designated thickness or below, the entire pad set has to be changed. In rear drum brakes, the front wheels should be chocked, and the rear raised and firmly stood on axle holders. It is easily checked by checking the thickness of the friction material of one of the brake shoes through the hole of the brake backplate which can be reached by prising out the sealing grommet; a rod having the same diameter as the stated minimum thickness of the friction material can be helpful in checking wear, and may need the use of a torch or inspection lamp. Worn out friction material on any shoe to the recommended minimum thickness or lower, then the shoes must be replaced as a set. To thoroughly investigate, the brake drum must be taken off and cleaned so that the inspection of the wheel cylinders and the state of the brake drum itself can be done. When the checks have been completed and any replacement made, replace the roadwheels and get the vehicle down to the ground.
