- Q: How to remove and refit the front shock absorber from the suspension strut on 1987 Audi 4000?A: Prise the cap from the centre of the roadwheel, then unscrew the driveshaft nut, which is tightened to a very high torque; no attempt to loosen it should be made unless the full weight of the car is on the roadwheels. Loosen the four bolts securing the roadwheel, then jack up the car and support the body securely on stands or wood blocks before removing the roadwheel. Remove the brake caliper without disconnecting the hydraulic hose, supporting it on a stand without straining the hose, and detach the hose bracket from the strut. Unscrew and remove the suspension balljoint clamp bolt, noting that its head faces forward, then use a balljoint removing tool to unscrew the nut and disconnect the tie-rod end from the strut/wheel bearing housing. Unscrew the anti-roll bar mounting bolts and remove the bar, then remove the driveshaft nut and push the wishbone down from the strut. Using a hub puller, press the driveshaft out of the front wheel hub, support the suspension strut from below, and in the engine compartment, pull off the dust cap and unscrew the nut from the top of the shock absorber piston rod while holding the piston rod stationary with an Allen key. Lower the suspension strut from under the car, and for refitting, reverse the removal process, ensuring all nuts and bolts are tightened to the specified torque, with the upper rubber damping ring dusted with talcum powder before fitting.
