1987 Audi 4000 Piston Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove the cylinder head, timing belt, and oil pump while marking the connecting rods and caps on the piston on 1987 Audi 4000?
A: Remove the cylinder head, timing belt, and oil pump. Mark each connecting rod and cap in relation to its cylinder and position. Turn the crankshaft so that No 1 piston is at the bottom of its bore, then unscrew the nuts/bolts and remove the big-end bearing cap. Using the handle of a hammer, push the piston and connecting rod out of the top of the cylinder. Put the bearing cap with its connecting rod, ensuring both have the cylinder number marked on them. If any bearing shells detach while removing the connecting rod and bearing cap, place them with their matching cap or rod. Repeat the procedure to remove the remaining pistons and connecting rods. Before removing the pistons from the connecting rods, if necessary, mark the connecting rods to indicate which side is towards the front of the engine, as the casting marks on the rod and cap face this direction. Remove the circlips from the grooves in the gudgeon pin holes and push the pin out enough for the connecting rod to be removed. Do not remove the pins completely unless new ones are to be fitted, to ensure the pin is not turned end for end when the piston is refitted. If the pin is difficult to push out, heat the piston by immersing it in hot water. New bushes can be fitted to the connecting rods, but as they need to be reamed to size after fitting, the job is best left to an Audi agent. Using old feeler gauges or pieces of rigid plastic inserted behind the piston rings, carefully ease each ring in turn off the piston. Lay the rings out so that they are kept the right way up and so that the top ring can be identified. Carefully scrape the rings free of carbon and clean out the ring grooves on the pistons using a piece of wood or a piece of broken piston ring.
