The turbocharger is an extremely delicate part that will be either crippled by insufficient lubrication or by foreign substance getting into it via the air intake duct and the symptoms of failure include poor engine performance, blue/ gray exhaust smoke, or abnormal sounds. In diagnosing suspected failure of turbocharge, looseness or damage in intake air duct, no limits to air intake system, damaged vacuum hose and wiring, no binding of actuator linkage in wastegate, and damage or restriction in exhaust system, supply of lubricating oil, drainback lines and coolant supply lines. When such checks fail to reveal the issue, a service department in a dealership or a repair facility equipped with the necessary equipment should be engaged in order to diagnose the problem. To replace the turbocharger of 1.8L models, take out the engine cover, fresh air inlet duct and air filter housing and drain engine oil and coolant. Unscrew the oil feed and coolant feed lines, lift the vehicle and get rid of the air conditioning compressor without removing the refrigerant hoses. Unscrew the air inlet and outlet ducts, unscrew the turbocharger support bracket, and unscrew the oil return line off the oil pan and be sure to spill any remaining oil. On 2.0L models, the same steps are used with the addition of the exhaust manifold heat shield and PCV fresh air inlet hose being removed, as well as multiple line banjo bolts. Installation of the new turbocharger assembly requires the replacement of all gaskets, seals, nuts, tighten all fasteners to the working torque, refuel the engine and coolant, and make sure that the engine is properly lubricated and then start the engine. To change intercooler, it is important to lift the vehicle, lay under-covers, take out radiator support depending on the model, either place the radiator support in the service position or take off the front bumper cover and headlight housing. Disassemble the air intake scoop, inlet and outlet air tube, and any structural blocking electrical connector then unmount the intercooler and the mounting bracket prior to taking off the intercooler then reassemble all damaged parts during the new mounting.
