Audi A3 Ignition Coil

The main activity of the Audi A3 Ignition Coil is to convert the soft twelve volts in the battery into lightning so that the spark plugs ignite at the time the engine requires it. The ignition system has an Ignition Coil that resembles a miniature transformer, a heavy primary winding, and a fine secondary coil wrapped around an iron core which stores the energy and then releases up to 40,000 volts per plug. When the electronic control unit switches off the current through the primary winding, the collapsing magnetic field enhances voltage and the plugs cause ignition of the fuel-air mixture, thus avoiding stalls, misfiring, or backfiring that a driver can experience in an Audi with deteriorating coils. Original Audi designs utilized a single canister type coil installed through a distributor and lengthy high-tension leads, whereas subsequent vehicles applied wasted spark packs that could serve two cylinders simultaneously, and highly recent A3 engines have a single small-diameter coil on each plug. The coil-on-plug design reduces the voltage path, eliminates electromagnetic losses, and enhances combustion stability, providing an Audi with faster starts and better acceleration. Irrespective of the type, an Ignition Coil should produce approximately 30 to 70 millijoules of energy per spark and, if the coil is weak, an Audi will either idle roughly or fail to have good fuel economy. Constant checking of coil resistance and early replacement of a worn Ignition Coil are also enough to keep the electronics in good health and help retain the spirited nature of the little one.

Choose original equipment manufacturer Ignition Coil for great performance and strong durability. They use Audi's official craftsmanship and high-grade materials, and meet strict quality standards. Audi A3 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the ignition coil unit with a single DIS coil on Audi A3?
    A:
To disconnect the ignition coil unit on a single DIS coil engine, make sure that the ignition has been switched off and the key has been turned out. When needed to access the engine top cover, remove the engine top cover that may have hidden accessing retaining nuts or plastic screws with a wide-bladed screwdriver. Removing the cover, pull out the main wiring plug at the base or side of the ignition coil. Original ignition leads must be labeled with 1 through 4, the 1 being at the end of the timing belt. Without markings, mark the ignition leads before removing them and either mark the terminals of the ignition coil or sketch the positions of leads to be connected at. To remove the coil unit, disconnect the ignition leads to the ignition coil terminals, unscrew the three mounting bolts and remove the coil unit. In one coil per spark plug engines, the ignition coils are to be disconnected to reach the spark plugs. Refitting is the reverse procedure that includes first fixing the coil mounting bolts firmly in place and fitting the previously mentioned marks to reconnect the ignition leads, which can be enhanced by applying a water-dispersant to each connector on the refitting.
