Audi 90 Radiator

The Audi 90 Radiator comes as the front-line absorber of engine overheating, and the unit absorbs all the surplus heat, hence keeping the motor in its comfort zone. This Radiator is mounted just behind the grille, and the hot coolant is pumped through slim tubes, while a thick grid of fine fins draws the warmth out, and a blast of air flowing over it carries it away. The unit accelerates convection by maximizing the surface area that enables the cooled liquid to recycle itself faster and back to the block. In most Audi models, factory installations have cores made of lightweight aluminum connected to plastic or similar aluminum tanks, but some older models have copper or brass cores that are heavier but can be soldered without difficulty after the slight leakage. The design of Audi cooling systems remains the same no matter the content; there is an inlet tank, tubes, an outlet tank, fins, and a fan pushing air when the car is not moving. The common issue that drivers experience is leakage in a seam or a tube; small holes can be fixed with brazing or welding, but replacement of a damaged Radiator guarantees complete remedy and full functionality. Owners of an Audi who prefer spirited trips place their faith in the Radiator since constant temperatures shield power output and avoid distorted components of the 90 and its siblings. It is easy to stay ahead of trouble by simply performing periodic coolant flushes to keep deposits off the fins so that an Audi continues to lose heat effectively year after year.

Audi 90 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disconnect and remove the radiator on Audi 90?
    A:
Disconnect the battery negative lead and drain the cooling system. For four-cylinder engines, on models with air conditioning, remove the front grille and detach the condenser from the radiator by removing the screws. Loosen the clips and disconnect the top and bottom hoses from the radiator, as well as the expansion tank hoses. Unscrew the bolts retaining the upper mounting brackets to the front panel, lift the brackets and rubber grommets from the radiator location pins, and disconnect the wiring from the thermo-switch located on the lower right-hand corner of the radiator. Disconnect the wiring from the electric fan motor and release the wiring harness from the clip. Unscrew the nuts retaining the radiator lower corner brackets to the rubber mountings, then lift the radiator from the lower mountings and withdraw it from the engine compartment, complete with the electric cooling fan(s) and cowling. For five-cylinder engines, detach the condenser from the radiator by removing the screws, unbolt and remove the upper radiator cowl, and disconnect the top hose and the upper and lower expansion tank hoses from the radiator. On models with air conditioning, automatic transmission, and trailer towing, also disconnect the auxiliary radiator hose from the top front of the radiator. Disconnect the wiring from the thermo-switch located on the bottom left of the radiator and from the electric fan motor, then unscrew the radiator mounting nuts and unbolt the right-hand radiator cowl. On 20-valve models equipped with ABS, loosen the fan motor mounting nuts and push the motor forwards. Lift the radiator from the mountings and withdraw it from the engine compartment, complete with the electric cooling fan and cowling. For all models, if necessary, unbolt and unclip the cooling fan and cowling from the radiator, then unscrew the nuts and separate the fan and motor from the cowling. Unscrew the thermo-switch and remove the gasket if necessary. Radiator repair is best left to a specialist, although minor leaks may be stopped using a proprietary coolant additive. Clean the radiator matrix of flies and small leaves with a soft brush or by hosing with water. Reverse-flush the radiator and renew the hoses and clips if they are damaged or deteriorated. Refitting is a reversal of removal, but fill the cooling system appropriately. If the thermo-switch was removed, fit a new gasket when refitting it, and check the mounting rubbers, renewing them if necessary.
