Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands before removing the relevant front wheel. For manual steering models, completely remove the anti-roll bar; for power steering models, unscrew the nut securing the side link to the lower suspension arm. Unscrew and remove the lower suspension balljoint clamp bolt, ensuring its head faces forwards. Tap the suspension arm downwards to release the balljoint from the wheel bearing housing. Unscrew and remove the pivot bolts from the subframe, noting that the nuts face each other, then lower the arm and withdraw it from under the car. Check the balljoint for excessive wear and examine the pivot bushes for deterioration, along with the suspension arm for damage. If necessary, renew the balljoint and bushes by first outlining the balljoint's exact position on the suspension arm, unscrewing the nuts, and removing the balljoint and clamp plate. Locate the new balljoint on the outline, fit the clamp plate, and tighten the nuts, using new ones. On non-Coupe models, ensure the offset side of the balljoint faces the front, while on Coupe models, the balljoint with the uneven part number should be on the left-hand side and the one with the even part number on the right-hand side. To renew the pivot bushes, use a long bolt with a metal tube and washers to pull out each bush, then fit the new bushes using the same method after dipping them in soapy water. Refitting the suspension arm is a reversal of removal, but delay tightening the pivot bolts until the weight of the car is on the suspension. Tighten all nuts and bolts to the specified torque, ensuring the inner pivot bolts are additionally angle-tightened, and renew all self-locking nuts. Finally, have the front wheel camber angle checked and adjusted by an Audi dealer if necessary upon completion.
