On four-cylinder engines, the alternator is positioned on the left-hand side, above the timing cover, while on five-cylinder engines, it is found on the bottom left-hand side of the engine. Begin by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Next, loosen the alternator pivot and adjustment bolts, then swivel the alternator towards the engine; for five-cylinder engines, remove the plastic cover in front of the radiator and the splash cover from under the engine for better access. Slip the drivebelt off the alternator pulley and take note of the wiring cables at the rear of the alternator before disconnecting them, ensuring to release any cables from clips if necessary. Remove the pivot and adjustment bolts to withdraw the alternator from the engine, and on four-cylinder engines, the adjustment link may be unbolted from the cylinder head if desired, while also prising a plug from the timing cover if needed for access to the pivot bolt. If required, unbolt the mounting brackets and remove the rubber bushes on four-cylinder engines; when refitting the bracket on five-cylinder engines, ensure the short bolt is tightened first. Finally, refitting follows the reverse order of removal, making sure to adjust the drivebelt accordingly.
