Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands. The thickness of the outer front brake pads may be checked by looking through the holes in the wheels, using a torch if necessary, while the inner pads can be checked with a mirror and torch through the holes in the rear of the brake callipers. If any pad is worn down to the specified minimum thickness, all the front brake pads should be renewed together; if the pads are not yet at their limits, allow approximately 600 miles (1000 km) for every 1 mm (0.04 in) thickness remaining to determine if they will wear below the limit before the next service. If there is any doubt about the thickness of the pads, remove both front wheels for a more thorough investigation. To remove the pads, first remove the wheels, marking them if they are to be re-used to ensure refitting in their original positions. For Teves callipers, prise the cap from the inner end of the lower guide pin, using grips if necessary, then unscrew and remove the lower guide pin with an Allen key. Unclip the flexible
Brake Hose from the wheel bearing housing, swing the calliper upwards, and tie it to the coil spring before removing the brake pads from the calliper frame. Check that the heat shield cover is correctly located in the piston recess and push the piston fully into the cylinder to accommodate the new pads. For Girling callipers, hold the lower guide pin stationary with an open-ended spanner and unscrew the securing bolt, then swing the calliper upwards and tie it to the coil spring before removing the brake pads from the calliper frame. Ensure the heat shield cover is correctly located in the piston recess and push the piston(s) fully into the cylinder(s) to accommodate the new pads. Brush the dust and dirt from the calliper, piston(s), disc, and pads, taking care not to inhale it, and scrape any scale or rust from the disc and pad backing plates. The set of new brake pads includes two self-locking bolts for fitting to the Girling callipers only. Refitting is a reversal of removal, tightening the guide pins or bolts to the specified torque. On completion, depress the brake pedal firmly several times with the car stationary to allow the brake pads to take up their normal running position, and also check the brake fluid level.
