Chock the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the car and support it on axle stands. Remove the rear wheels and release the handbrake. Working under the car, unscrew the adjusting nut and remove the equalizer bar from the rear of the handbrake operating bar. Unclip the handbrake cables from the brackets and supports. Fit brake hose clamps to the two flexible hoses leading to the rear brakes, then unscrew the union nuts and disconnect the two rigid brake lines. Unscrew and remove the nuts from the pivot bolts at the front of the rear axle trailing arms, but do not remove the bolts at this stage. Unhook the brake pressure regulator control spring from the rear axle. Unscrew the nut and remove the bolt securing the Panhard rod to the rear axle. Support the rear axle on a trolley jack or on axle stands. Unscrew and remove both rear shock absorber lower mounting bolts. With the help of an assistant, remove the pivot bolts, then lower the rear axle to the ground while guiding the handbrake cable over the exhaust system. If necessary, remove the stub axles, brake lines, and handbrake cables. The pivot bushes may be renewed using a long bolt and nut, metal tube, and parking washers. When fitting the new bushes, ensure that the two gaps in the rubber are horizontal and in line with the trailing arm, pressing the bushes in until flush with the arm. Refitting is a reversal of removal, but delay fully tightening the mounting bolts until the weight of the car is on the suspension. Tighten all nuts and bolts to the specified torque, renewing all self-locking nuts. Bleed the hydraulic system and adjust the handbrake cable as needed.
