Jack up the rear of the car and support it with axle stands positioned beneath the underbody, chocking the front wheels before removing the rear wheels. Unhook the rubber mounting rings and lower the rear exhaust silencer as far as possible, supporting it on an axle stand. Unscrew the nut from the handbrake lever rod and remove the compensator bar, then prise the handbrake cable guide bushes from the underbody brackets and remove the cables from the rear brackets. Remove the brake fluid reservoir filler cap and tighten it down onto a piece of polythene sheeting placed over the reservoir filler hose to prevent fluid loss, or alternatively fit brake hose clamps to both rear brake hoses. Disconnect both rear brake hoses from the trailing arms by unscrewing the rigid brake line union nuts while holding the hose end unions stationary with a spanner, and remove the clamp plates. Loosen the nuts on the pivot bolts at the front of the trailing arms, unhook the brake pressure regulator spring from the rear axle, and unbolt the Panhard rod from the rear axle. Support the rear axle with a trolley jack and place axle stands beneath the trailing arms, then unscrew and remove the rear shock absorber lower mounting bolts and the pivot bolts from the trailing arms. With assistance if necessary, lower the rear axle to the ground while guiding the handbrake cable over the exhaust pipe. If needed, remove the
Stub Axles, brake lines, and handbrake cables; the pivot bushes can be renewed using a long bolt and nut, metal tube, and packing washers, ensuring the bush gaps align with the trailing arms and pressing the bushes in flush. Refitting is a reversal of removal, but delay tightening the rear axle, shock absorber, and Panhard rod mounting bolts until the weight of the car is on the suspension, followed by bleeding the hydraulic system and adjusting the handbrake cable.
